the young footballers up in your area one time, the play looked like an

Enjoyed
my time in Two Harbors during my visit many years ago. Witnessed a
B-Team football game and saw the funniest thing – the game was delayed
because the long snapper wasn’t sporting the correct attire. The
handsome coach made him take off his fancy white shoes in exchange for
some worn out black canvas footwear. Didn’t seem right, the center
looked like a fine young man. Signed, Kirk Lowdermilk

Stumbled
upon a large rusty contraption near some blocking sleds behind the
Arena many years ago. Some young folks explained that the thing was
called a Blaster and the local football team used it for training.
Tried my luck at the drill, but the mammoth spring-loaded unit
backfired and sent me airborne. By the time I landed I was halfway to
Hoyt Lakes. Signed, Gary Cuozzo

Our
family, for over twenty years, made certain that part of our vacation
would be spent on the great North Shore of Minnesota. We would camp out
at the Wagon Wheel Campground just south of Two Harbors, MN, right on
the shore of Lake Superior. It was a place of relaxation and refuge for
us. Every year we would try to set up camp at the same site or close to
it. We had some wonderful family times. Our children are now grown up
and have since gotten lives of their own. We miss those times together,
but we have and will continue to have many happy memories of special
days at a special place.

Brought
my sunscreen up during my visit up there last year. Didn't need it as
it was 50 degrees during our entire stay. Shot 18 holes of golf at the
local course, but lost several balls in the dense fog. The only

They sure had fun, especially the guy in the USPS hat. Signed, Jan

I
recently took a nature walk through beautiful Skunk woods. Not long
after I started in, I became winded and sat next to a large rock not
far off the path. Found an old empty mayonaise jar with the word
"firewater" on the label. I sat and pondered for a while and wondered
if I'd stumbled on some old native american holy ground. Regards, Mark
Olberding.

A
few years back I decided to brave the cool, rapid waters of the Cloquet
River all alone in my canoe. I came upon the most beautiful white pine
I had ever seen. She stood tall and straight, right on the banks of the
old Cloquet. She was no less than 250 years old. Ahh, the stories she
could tell….. But in an instant my feeling of awe turned into
disbelief, as I witnessed an older aluminum boat travelling out of
control into a fallen branch over the river. A gentleman in a purple
tee-shirt was motioning for a handsome younger fellow to slow down as
the twosome crashed directly into the branch. Farther upstream, I saw
three skinny lads in another boat laughing at the misfortunes of the
two sorry travelers. I found it rather odd, but to this day, I believe
the old white pine is still piecing together her words to another
amusing story that she will be able to narrate to her listeners long
after the day she finally falls….. James Fletcher

- I was attempting to cajole my fellow bowler, Dick Webber, into skiing

Once
toured a wooded area near Indian Lake in hopes of constructing a new
executive golf course. On the drive in, we confronted an old man in a
weathered brown jacket who was apparently trying to find his dentures
in the mud. A little later down the road, an older model RV nearly ran
us off the road. The driver was yelling something about an incompetent
co-pilot. Beautiful country up there, I still hope to explore this
possibility further. Signed, Jack Nicklaus

After
stringing a hammock between two stately pines, I settled down for an
afternoon of reading my favorite periodical at the Indian Lake

Vega and headed home....Chris Shenkel

How's
the fishing at Greenwood Lake? I haven't been there for years. One
year, in the early morning, the fish were biting like crazy over by
Rocky Shores. Then several tentloads of young men awoke, started making
bloody marys and listening to loud country and western music. They
scared us and the fish away, and didn't even invite us to shore for a

Many
years ago we stopped at Flood Bay to take in the beautiful scenery. We
walked up the beach, and noticed a couple of young men attempting to
grill steaks on a small grill. They were having one heck of a time
getting the briquettes to stay lit. As we got closer, I noticed the
heavier one of the two was drinking Miller shorties and singing. The
other fellow was also drinking beer, but he appeared to be doing all
the work. The big singer wasn't half bad. I wonder if those guys ever
got the grill going? The cuts of steak looked tremendous. Sincerely,

What
is going on at the campground??? For the last three weeks I have read
letters from campers that normally stay at the campground all summer or
for extended periods and are they upset. They are referring to unfair
treatment by lack of notification regarding rate increases and other
items that I am not aware of. Do we really want to have all these
people mad at Two Harbors when they spend thousands of dollars in our
"destination" area every summer. I think not. Hope someone can look
into this problem and come up with a feasible solution.

I
once canoed the Cloquet River by myself from Indian Lake. Even though
the river was down, I still had to duck at the railroad bridge. Just
past the bridge I discovered a small lake, later I found it on a map
that it was named Papoose Lake. At first glance, this appeared to be a
pristine place -- and for a moment I was in awe. Suddenly, a boat load
of young men could be seen and heard off in the distance in a small
fishing boat. I heard them singing songs and carrying on. I continued
on my way down the river. A fine journey it was. Randy Bruer

I
always enjoy my travels to your area. One year, we went north on
Highway #2 and stopped at a lake called Greenwood for some afternoon
fishing. We caught a few walleye after running into many rocks, then
started back for Two Harbors. Somehow we ended up taking a wrong turn
and found ourselves at a bar named Hugo's. The people there were
friendly so we had a pizza and a few 3.2 beers, then got directions on
how to get back to Two Harbors from an old man in a weathered brown
jacket. We ended up back in Two Harbors just in time to see a beautiful
full moon rise over the big lake. What a journey it was! Thank You,

When
I was a little kid, during the late 1930"s and early 1940's, my
hayfever-suffering family and others spent Septembers camped in what is
now a city park along the lake side of 1st street. Down the hill in the
woods on the west side of that street was a log building containing a
couple of old cookstoves and a few picnic tables where we and the other
campers had fishfries. The building is gone, but over in the park, a
couple of old cement grills and a rusty old electric outlet on a tree
remain of our campground. We showed up about 50 years before Two
Harbors was ready for tourists. Keith Nichols, Dallas
